My Story - Mohamed Al Kharusi, Chairman
I have been fortunate enough to enjoy a professional career spanning more than 40 years in Human Resources & Information Technology, predominately within the Oil & Gas sector. I began my working life in London shortly after graduating from Loughborough University in UK, in Industrial Mathematics. At the same time I pursued a part time MSc at Brunel University in UK where I graduated in Numerical Analysis.
I entered the working world as a Research Assistant for the University of London and most of my time was spent building and controlling econometric models for the UK economy. After a while, my wife and I decided it was time for a change.
Coincidently, someone had arranged for me to have an interview with Shell EP in London which went very well. The job was offered, I accepted and after a short secondment to Shell Expro in London and Shell EP in The Hague we were looking forward to bringing the skills we had learnt and developed to benefit our home country, Oman.
So, at the ripe ‘young’ age of 27, together with my wife and our new born baby, we repatriated back to Muscat to begin what was certainly going to be a very valuable, educational and enriching journey – which I am still experiencing today.
In Muscat I became a young professional at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and during that time was exposed to many areas of the business. I was lucky enough to be offered international assignments to support Shell in Brunei and in The Hague.
My career spanned 29 years with PDO and I am still truly grateful to them for allowing me to learn, develop and to refine my skillset, reaching eventually to the position of HR Director. All the while, after each secondment, affording me the opportunity to bring that knowledge back to Oman to be implemented and shared amongst my peers and colleagues.
Life after PDO left me pondering about my next challenge. I now had 3 grown up children, my wife and I were ‘empty nesters’ so I decided to take some time out to spend with family and close friends .
One unsuspecting evening I received a call from the Managing Director of a reputed executive search firm called InterSearch based in the UAE. The opportunity was to be Group HR Manager for ENOC, a national petroleum company based in Dubai. I deliberated long and hard about accepting another ‘out of country’ post because I knew I wanted to support and share what I had learnt about International HR best practise in the local market here – in Oman. I pondered this for some time and in the end realized that this was the next challenge I was looking for and in total I spent 4 very happy years in the UAE with ENOC.
In the summer of 2008 I decided to finally come home. I joined MB Holding and established the role of Corporate Operations Director where I oversaw all Group Corporate Operations and was able to apply what I had learnt over so many years by transforming a number of processes to improve both HR and business performance. I eventually decided to retire after an exciting 5 years with MB and was pleased with what I had achieved and succeeded in the corporate world.
I was looking forward to being able to put my feet up and play with the grandchildren and then it happened (again). I received an unsuspecting call from the same company, InterSearch, and the same guy, John Robinson, who wanted to discuss another opportunity with me.
In February, 2013 that opportunity came to fruition, I established Talent Development LLC in Oman, to focus on what I love doing – Recruitment and Human Resources. My passion is people, offering them opportunities, helping them develop and shaping companies and culture.
At Talent Development we specialise is recruitment, focussing on the mid-level professional right through to identifying senior managers, operating on a contingent success fee model; no placement, no fee. Of course, being an Omani company we are particularly adept at finding top-quality Omanis as well as international professionals from anywhere in the world.
Through my long standing professional relationship with John Robinson, I am also Chairman of InterSearch Oman, the only global executive search firm with an office here in Oman. With InterSearch we have been pivotal in assisting many of Oman’s top companies and State Institutions by identifying talented leadership with emphasis on the very senior end of the spectrum, starting with senior managers, progressing into ‘C suite executives’ and board director hires.
We look forward to working with you in identifying, attracting and helping you hire the talent of tomorrow.
